Pittsburgh at the Deadline
Greetings Pens faithful
The Penguins were very busy at the deadline, speaking to as many as seven teams. Gm Rick was looking to upgrade the teams defense and land a solid forward to play left wing with Malkin and Schiefele.
Gm Rick
" We identified very early that we did not have a defense that could sustain what we wanted to build here in Pittsburgh and I mean, very early. That is why we went out and got Suter. We wanted to add two dmen to our group and land that winger"
Now you don't get something good without giving up something good. In the first deal, Pittsburgh sent Krejci and huge dman Gudas to the NY Rangers in exchange for Jason Spezza and Erik Gudbranson. That upgraded the topline scoring and upgraded the 3rd pairing on defense. The team still needed another top 4, 2-3 type dman to round out the D core. The 2nd deal with Florida landed them a top offensive dman in Tyson Barrie, it was expensive as Schwartz and 18 year old Jake Bean were part of that trade.
Gm Rick
" We really like Schwatzie, good guy good player full of potential and Jake will be a player. But the chance to bring Tyson into this group, I think truly solidified our D core. With him and Suter we have two of the top scoring Dmen in the league, and with Gudbranson we are strong at all 6 spots defensively."
The Gm is gambling that Brassard, elevated Anisimov and Hemsky can provide some secondary scoring. As well the Coach has revamped his 4th line and put Laughton centering, Ryan White and Sven Baertschi.
Coach Rick
" We are a little stronger on the top line a little weaker on the 2nd line, the 3rd line can serve a checking role, the 4th line we just wanted to see if we could generate something offensively, these are the best we have left."
Currently the Pens are holding on with both hands to the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, 1 point ahead of Buffalo after both teams have played 69 games. The boys are 3 points behind Columbus with two games in hand on the Jackets. The hockey club has continued to suffer injury to that revamped D and have yet to see a game where the 6 are on the ice, and they desperately need that to happen soon for them to punch a ticket to the dance.
...out for now....peace
