Top Shelf Inaugural Draft: Rounds 6-10
Round #6: 158
Pick: Valeri Nichushkin
Analysis: Again, probably a bit of a reach here, but I didn't feel like waiting 45 picks to see if he'd still be around. I'm banking that this height/weight/speed specimen returns back to what he was before his nasty injury. He's playing a little too cautious now, which is resulting in inconsistency, but I feel like once he gets his groove back, he could be a force to be reckoned with. He'll look very nice on my 2nd line.
Round #7: 203
Pick: Jonas Brodin
Analysis: Kind of wish I could have drafted the entire Minnesota Wild D corps here, but I'll settle for Brodin. He's a great puck-mover who's just starting to fill out, which has resulted in big time minutes for him lately. He can be a little passive at times, but decisive play will come with more time in that Top 4. Hopefully he can open up some chances for Ghost or some of our other dmen here in Calgary.
Round #8: 218
Pick: Derrick Pouliot
Analysis: Could not believe he was still here. Sure, Pittsburgh still has Letang and Maatta, but he's a different breed in my opinion. He's a super agressive defenseman, which helps him out offensively and defensively. It's a nice change of pace for Pittsburgh, and certainly a welcome addition to our team here in Calgary.
Round #9: 263
Pick: Kevin Fiala
Analysis: I was playing chicken with this pick for a couple of rounds, but figured once the news broke out that he was being called up to spark the slumping Preds, I had to pounce on him right away. Chicago and Minnesota scared me that round, and I didn't think I'd get the chance to scoop him up, but I got lucky. What he lacks in size, he makes up for in competitiveness. One of the best 1-on-1 skaters I've ever seen at his tender age of 19. Can be the playmaker, or the scorer.
Round #10: 278
Pick: Nic Petan
Analysis: Again, not being able to pick for another 45 picks might have made me jump on him a little early, but you can't deny this kid's ceiling. He started off the season on the big club, and I suspect he finds a way back on there and ends the season there as well. He's another small player, but he's also one of the more intelligent young players in the league. Like Mark Stone intelligent. He can play any forward position, but excels as a centre.
