The Anaheim Mighty Ducks have added some veteran presence to their roster in rounds 5 and 6. Between them, Mikko Koivu (announced as team Captain) and Dustin Byfugline bring 1,362 games of experience with them to Orange County.
Here’s what the anaylists had to say about the Ducks’ 3rd and 4th round picks:
Dustin Byfuglien
“Dustin Byfuglien may just be the most unique player in the NHL today,” stated Ely Freedman, “with his ability to play both the forward and defence position equally well and his sheer size, there is simply no other player like him in the NHL. I believe the Mighty Ducks plan on using him as a defenseman, which is just as well, as that is his preferred position.”
Interesting Stat
Among players who have only played defense over the time span, Byfuglien ranks third in total goals with 47 (3 back of leader Erik Karlsson) and first in goals per game with 0.249 since the start of the 2013-14 season.
Mikko Koivu
“Mikko Koivu is one of the all-time great Finns” said Darrin Drieger, “If he can average 45 points a season for another five seasons, he will climb to fourth in all time scoring among Finnish players, trailing only a pair of Hall of Famers in Teemu Selanne and Jari Kurri, and, fittingly, his older brother Saku.
Interesting Stat
Though he has had his fair share of injuries, Mikko Koivu produces when he is in the lineup. His 0.79ppg pace since the beginning of the 2007-08 season ranks him 18th among centremen with at least 450GP, ahead of the likes of Joe Pavelski, Jeff Carter, David Krejci and Patrice Bergeron.
