Those that wondered what identity Mighty Ducks GM Andre Deblois would adopt for his team throughout this Inaugural Draft have had their doubts answered, emphatically. Based on their first two picks, it’s clear that these Ducks will be an attacking team.
In Claude Giroux and John Klingberg, the Mighty Ducks have selected one of the most prominent scorers the NHL has seen this decade and the most exciting puck moving defenseman to enter the NHL since Erik Karlsson.
Here’s what the analysts had to say about the Ducks’ foundation players:
Claude Giroux
“Claude Giroux has the ability to create offense out of nothing,” stated Rob Mackenzie, “he has formed a dynamic duo with Jake Voracek in Philadelphia. Problem is, the rest of Flyers lineup does not provide enough support for the top line, as no defense pair or other line has a positive Corsi For Percentage over the last two and half seasons. If the Flyers ever find a way to provide adequate support, helping to shift the defensive focus away from Claude, the sky is the limit for his potential production.”
Interesting Stat
Claude Giroux has scored the most points of any NHLer this decade, accumulating 406 points in 400 games since the start of the 2010 season.
John Klingberg
“Is he the next Erik Karlsson?” asks Mick Kiprous, “Maybe. If any defenseman can reach that level, this is probably the guy. Regardless, he has the skills to move the puck out of his zone in an efficient manner almost every time and the skilled teammates to help him finish off plays in the offensive zone. The points will continue to pile up for this kid.”
Interesting Stat
In his first 100 games, current dynamo defenseman Erik Karlsson scored 51 points. In his first 100 games, the greatest Swedish defenseman of all time, Niklas Lidstrom scored 70 points. In his first 100 career games, John Klingberg has scored 72 points.
