Top Shelf Inaugural Draft: Rounds 1-5
Round #1: 23
Pick: Nicklas Backstrom
Analysis: I suspect he dropped because of injury concerns, but the truth is he's only missed part of 1 other season. He's scoring at a ppg right now and I don't see him (or the Caps) slowing down this season. His value will be sky-high by the end of the year, and could be the force to lead my franchise, or a very valuable bargaining chip, depending on the direction I'd like to go in.
Round #2: 38
Pick: Dylan Larkin
Analysis: This kid is the real deal. After being put on the Wings' top line, he took off. He's the future of that team, and possibly the future of mine. It's a shame there's no yellow on his jersey in real life, cause he looks like The Flash out there. He can play any forward position. Again, he helps me whichever way I'd like to go, since his rerate will be nice next season, or I could look to deal him if I feel I could make a push now.
Round #3: 83
Pick: Max Domi
Analysis: His chemistry with Duclair carried over from last year's WJC to the NHL, but he's starting to prove that he can play with anyone, and he can play any forward position. He's money on the power play, can kill penalties, and won't have too much competition. He can be the goal-scorer or the playmaker. This team has lots of versatility so far, and I love it. No-brainer pick, and I couldn't believe he was still there at #83.
Round #4: 98
Pick: Sam Bennett
Analysis: Tried to get Seth Jones, but I don't mind picking up Bennett instead! Made my decision easier. Hard to find a player with his upside who's in a better situation (team fit, good minutes, coach trust). I guarantee that this time next year, he'll be one of the best young forwards in the league. Oh yeah, he can play any forward position.
Round #5: 143
Pick: Shayne Gostisbehere
Analysis: Might have been a bit of a reach, as he's only been in the NHL for part of a season, but what a stretch it's been. Regardless of Philly's other amazing D prospects, I think Ghost is making his case to be a part of that Top 4, and maybe even Top 2 eventually. If he can bulk up some more, he'll be a complete defenseman.
