If I was the GM of the Oilers...this is what I would do. I am just a fan but lets take a look.
This is what I think is wrong. If you take any good young draft pick and insert him into an NHL lineup he would play usually on a lower line, or in the AHL, and be allowed to develop slowly. These young studs that the Oilers drafted have been thrust into headlining roles from their first steps on the ice in Edmonton. Going head to head against the best players in the NHL when they still had pimples on their faces. They have not had time to develop slowly and find their own style in the NHL world. They have also had no leadership that they can actually rely on to lead them, get in the trenches, and represent them as the kids grow.
Their needs
1) A leader with toughness, size, and grit....can score some dirty goals but most importantly can be the voice of the franchise while the kids "Grow on the Go"
Wish List - Scott Hartnell
2) Set some lines and let the kids grow as groups. Stop changing the lines every game looking for the magic combo that wins 7 to 1 every night. They cant even figure themselves out yet...why make them learn new line mate habits every night.
3) Be patient with the Goalies, The guys they have now are actually not bad.... let them learn as well. They also have a good one in the AHL so be patient...again. Not many would play better with the worst team in the NHL ahead of them.
4) Don't trade away the first round pick this year. Draft the best guy and add him to the group. If it is a forward...fine. These guys are not getting it done so lets keep adding.
5) See if RNH or Dr. Drai can play wing. Dumping RNH because he is too expensive as a third line center doesn't make sense. If it is due to salary cap that may be a different story.
6) Defense - lets not rush and give away the farm boys. We aint winning next year either.
This is what I would try and do.
1) Try and get Hartnell from Columbus (and make him your Captain before he even boards the plane) for Yakapov, Kyle Platzer and Schultz. Getting both guys, although they are projects, may be of interest to Columbus as they try and rebuild on the go. They are going young and fast and Hartnell is not young. Yak is only a 2.5 hit and Schultz is an RFA at years end. They move about 5 mill off their books with Hartnell gone. The Oilers gain Hartnell's 5 mill contract but they also move the other 6.4. ...Hartnell has a no movement clause but see if he will waive it?
2) Don't trade away the 1st pick or any of the studs quite yet. Lets see if we can grab somebody like Alex Goligoski or Brian Campbell out of the UFA pool, and let Nurse, Davidson, Sekera and Klefbom grow together some more. Use your second, third, and 4th draft pick on Dmen only.
3) Trade Purcell, Korpikoski, and Letestu for picks or D prospects. We may not get much.
Lines would be.... and lets leave them together for 25- 30 games (barring injury) and just see what happens...it cant get any worse.
Draisaitl - RNH - Hall
Eberle - McDavid - Hartnell
Pakarinin - New Guy - Pouliot
Kassian - Lander- Hendricks
Klefbom - Nurse
Sekera - Davidson
Hunt - Osterle ( or new signing?)
Talbot
Nilsson
Brossoit
Feel free to beat me up now...LOL
